Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to correct the size and/or shape of the labia.

Common Reasons Why this Procedure is Done are:

  • Large labia due to anatomical variation or after significant weight loss
  • Irregularly shaped or asymmetrical labia
  • Disfigurement/scarring due to injury/tearing during delivery of the baby
  • Discomfort in the labia associated with enlarged skin
  • Cosmetic reasons

How is the Procedure Done?

It is usually done under general anaesthetic in a hospital theatre.  Part of the labium/labia is removed and the skin sutured with dissolvable sutures.

Unless specific criteria are met, Medicare and Health Funds do not pay for this procedure which will leave women out of pocket thousands of dollars.

Post-operative pain is usually minimal, and the woman is usually able to leave the hospital the same day.

What are the Possible Complications?

  • bleeding
  • haematoma
  • infection
  • necrosis
  • scarring
  • chronic pain
  • The cosmetic result is not as expected
